8 Ways to Appreciate Your Workforce on Labor Day

Among the three patriotic summer holidays, Labor Day is the most significant in business and represents the essence of our American Culture. Founded by the Central Labor Union in  New York City on September 5, 1882, this national holiday pays tribute to the American worker. It is much more than the last hurrah of summer.
According to the United States Department of Labor, “ Labor Day is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.”
Celebrate the holiday and your employees – 8 suggestions
“The supreme accomplishment is to blur the lines between work and play.”   Arnold J. Toynbee

  1. Take a few minutes to write personal notes of appreciation. Show staff how much you value their hard work and dedication. If your team is too large, you can acknowledge all levels of your workforce through email, such as “Thank you for your hard work and dedication throughout the year. Have a wonderful Labor Day weekend.”
  2. Treat workers with a “get out of work early” treat. Close the office a couple of hours earlier to avoid holiday traffic and get a head start on their fun weekend.
  3. As Labor Day approaches, switch up roles in your company. Give your managers aprons and let them flip a few burgers for a company lunch on the house. It’s a fun way for all to mingle in a relaxed setting.
  4. Give out coupons for a local coffee hangout.
  5. Have a pizza day; who doesn’t love pizza?
  6. Organize a potluck lunch and offer a prize for the best office chef.
  7. Designate a fun-filled day of events, which not only serves as a team-building activity but is also a great stress-reliever.
  8. Host an off-site picnic with outdoor activities at a local park.

Whichever method you choose to recognize your workers, each helps build an outstanding office culture. Although employee appreciation should be part of your everyday business strategy, acknowledgment on Labor Day is especially important and should be a priority for your company, especially during the current economy.
