4 Benefits of Working a Temp Job During the COVID-19 Crisis

There are 21 million Americans out of work this summer. We know what you’re going through. The COVID-19 pandemic created this strange new normal we’re all living in. Our firm talks to people like you every day, that have terrific skills and a great resume, but no job. If you’re ready to get back to work, there is an alternative you may not have considered.
Temporary jobs are the answer for many companies when times are so uncertain. These roles can give valuable experience to a new graduate or help a seasoned worker keep their hand in the game. If you need a job fast, consider a temporary position. Here are four reasons these jobs can be particularly important in a down economy.

1. Money, money, money

Why do we work? The paycheck, of course, whether you are a CEO or a warehouse worker. Temp jobs allow you the opportunity to earn while others are waiting on a government check. Being able to earn a check, even if it’s only for a few months, keeps the rent paid but also extends your unemployment benefits. Contract temporary work pays well, and certainly more than unemployment benefits.

2. Work experience

It’s always easier to find a job when you already have a job. But the work experience you gain in a temporary position could help take your career to the next level. This is also true for new graduates from high school or college who desperately want to earn their independence and grow into a career. Consider temp work as a way to start putting experience on your resume that will set you up for success later on.

3. Test the waters

Temp jobs are a way for workers to get a taste of an industry or company they may not have considered in the past. Taking a permanent full-time role is always risky; there is no way to really know what the company is like unless you’ve tried it out by working as a temp. But temp work is also a good way to determine if the industry you’re entering is one that makes sense for your career goals and interests. Consider temping as a way to test the waters as you figure out what you want to do next.

4. Build your network

The truth is simple: If you want to work, get out there to find opportunities. You are not going to make business connections while sitting in your chair at home. Temping is the perfect way to build your industry connections, show off your strengths as a candidate, and get you in on job opportunities that may not even be advertised yet.
