Fastrack: Turn Your Temp Job into Full-Time

The temp workforce isn’t losing any steam in today’s economy. More than ever, job seekers are seeking contract work, and more companies are hiring temp workers. This trend is popular because it allows candidates and corporations to “Try it before they buy it.” If you are looking to turn your position from temporary to full-time, here are a few tips that may help.

Job-Seeker Tips

First and foremost, if you are about to “go temp” to find that perfect long-term job, make sure the company for which you are interested has a practice of converting their contract workers to full-time employees.

1. Reliability: Employers want to hire employees they can count on; that’s why you must always be 100% reliable.
• Get to work on time, or a few minutes early
• Produce quality work at all times
• Ask co-workers if they need your help
• Communicate clearly

2. Enthusiasm: Go above and beyond to show your passion for the job. Offer to work late if necessary, and be flexible.

3. Self-talk: Never go into a temp position with the mindset that you’re only a temp. Turn any negative self-talk into a positive one. Remind yourself that they hired you because you were needed, and your skills are in demand. Act as if you are indeed a part of the company, working full-time.

4. Robotics: Flex staff and full-timers alike sometimes become robots; they go to work, follow the same routine day in and day out, punch out and go home. If you want to become a permanent fixture in this company, you must break out of the mold and show what makes you stand out. Take a genuine interest in the company and network with company staff and leaders.

5. Innovate: Show your stuff. Depending on your position, you may have the opportunity to offer up a few unique ideas to increase productivity or sales. Just because you are part of the flex team doesn’t mean your insights are less valuable. Quite the contrary, this can bring you recognition and put a face to your name.

6. Culture: Each company establishes a work environment or culture. Take time to understand that culture. If something seems odd, don’t chat about it with co-workers, communicate with your manager to get a better understanding of the situation in question. Gossipers are not popular in the workforce.

In summary, it’s the perfect time to break into a full-time position by temping. According to the American Staffing Association (ASA), “During the course of a year, America’s staffing companies hire nearly 17 million temporary and contract employees.” Out of the 17 million, 76 percent work full time, 49 percent of workers say it’s a great way to get a full-time gig, and 66 percent of the 35 percent offered a full-time job accepted the position.
