New Year’s Resolution Crash Site: Multiple Fatalities

January is over, February is almost gone, and so are many of our new year’s resolutions. In fact, according to a blog by Jarrod Mills,
“Studies show that only 8% of Americans who make a New Year’s resolution keep them , and 80% have failed by the start of February.”
Wait! There is hope for resolution revival. It begins with your approach.
It’s human nature to stress over the goals you did not meet, but while it’s good to recognize what you can do better, it’s also vital to see what you’ve accomplished.
So, before you re-evaluate your plan for 2020, take a look at 2019.

  • Celebrate your milestones
  • Savor the feeling you had when you accomplished a goal
  • Determine any goals you did not meet and strategize how you will complete them in 2020
  • Bite off small chunks instead of trying to tackle everything at once
  • Stay positive

See, you’re in a better place than you thought! Now, it’s time to rewrite your resolutions/goals for the rest of 2020.
What Motivates You?
Whether your goals are personal or business-related, make sure they are your goals and not goals you set to please others. Goals you set must stimulate your drive to succeed. Your resolutions must align with your motivations and dreams.
Take Baby Steps
One major reason people do not fulfill New Year’s resolutions is that they bite off more than they can chew. It’s great to be ambitious, but taking on too much will only lead to failure and disappointment.

  • Visually shortlist your goals and priorities. You can use a large poster board with post-it notes
  • Make subcategories for each main goal, along with tactics you will use for each
  • Group similar post-its and prioritize

The key to this method is to know how much you can physically handle. Your post-it board is a compilation of everything you want to achieve in the upcoming year, but you must think carefully about which goals are realistic. Decide on whether you want to tackle a few, or even one resolution well or multiple resolutions poorly.
Be Realistic
You managed to shortlist your resolutions/goals, but are the ones you focused on realistic? Do they fit into the popular acronym of SMART goals?

  • Specific: What, where, why, how, when, with whom.
  • Measurable: The ability to measure your progress is essential.
  • Attainable: Weigh the effort, time, and cost against the final profit and satisfaction. Can you do it, and is it worth it?
  • Relevant: Does it fit you, or did you choose it because you think you should?
  • Timely: Can your goals handle a flexible, realistic timeline?

Every successful business is built with individual segments of well-structured goals, tactics, and plans. Your personal and business new year’s resolutions – though set with the best of intentions – should follow the same strategy to reach the same sense of accomplishment and level of success.
